Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. However, her parents did not let her perform until she turned an adult due to the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry says she didn't want to perform in high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity while at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University moved into New York in search of acting roles on television. She landed small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness drove her to California to find theater work. The Other Place was performed by her and her mother in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, Perry played a supporting role in ABC's political thriller Scandal that starred her father. The same year the actress was selected to play the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young character of her mom's. She was cast in the role despite her close family connection to the character.
